Martin Parr

Martin Parr is one of my favorite photographers. His ability to shed a sense of humor on cultural peculiarities is admirable. Here are some of his latest shots.

Josh Mannis

"...my big project is about ways in which an image can get over on and manipulate its beholder - in both the making and the viewing of a piece. The reverse is an image that grants permission, or seems to address a viewer as an equal, or as a partner in the process of generating the meaning of the piece. I guess these are also political ideas, in the sense that they are about how an artwork, through these modes of address, generates and determines the nature of a social space inhabited by artist - piece - viewer(s), and I think it gets at what we want out of an image in the first place."
Josh Mannis from an interview with FecalFace

Tina Tyrell

Since I bought my dog Toby I've done the exact opposite of what most pet owners do.
I got completely uninterested in any other dogs or cats. They all became pathetic creatures wishing they coud be Toby.
Hes growing a gray beard on his snout that used to be black, which was the best part of his profile. Maybe he'd like it if I dyed it?

I love Tina Tyrell's interpretation of The Westminster Dog Show.

I mean, I want it to sound rich and maybe almost a little wavy...

-It's like there's, um, this whole telepathic thing going on that we’re all a part of, whether we’re conscious of it or not.
-That would explain why there's all these, you know, seemingly spontaneous, worldwide, innovative leaps in science, in the arts.
You know, like the same results poppin' up everywhere independent of each other. Some guy on a computer, he figures something out, and then almost simultaneously, a bunch of other people all over the world...
- figure out the same thing.
- Mm-hmm.

Look how small we are

Tom Hines

Despite my opinions on film micking in Digital photography, I find these photographs for Lorick by Tom Hines beautiful. I see various sources of inspiration in the compositions and narratives portrayed in some of the shots. Although they are not necessarily progressive in anyway, I like them.

Pivotal moments in world history depicted with Legos.
There is even a Charlie Chaplin reference, can you catch it?

Fabricated photographs and the like

I saw the Jo Ann Callis exhibition at the Getty yesterday. I didn't expect to see so much of her work; her range of subjects and compositional technique is remarkable to me.
Callis has a fabricated essence to all of here work, much like Paul Outerbridge who is also featured.
The Exhibition ends August 9, 2009 so if you get a chance please go!
